Is
SmartBurn easy to use
? Yes. Simply place the
SmartBurn horizontally in the base of the fire-box.
Keep it flat and level at all times to keep the ingredients inside
the casing.
Place the SmartBurn in a 'cooler' part of the fire, preferably in
the front corner or to the side, where it will be least
disturbed.
Do not "cook it" - do not place it in the
concentrated heat area (middle) of the fire (otherwise it will not
last the 3 months).
Keep the SmartBurn flat &
level at all times by sitting it on a little ash to stop it
from tipping.
Suggested positioning:
Lounge Combustion Heater:
Place flat & level in a Front Corner, lengthways along
the side of the heater.
If using two SmartBurns - place one on opposite
sides at each front corner of the
heater.
Open Fireplace: Place to the
side or under the grate - sit on a paving brick to prevent ends
from being covered in ash.
Kitchen wood stoves - sit in
the "ash-pan", on a paving brick to prevent ends from being covered
in ash.
Important: Keep both ends of your SmartBurn "open" and free from ash, to enable it to work.
How long will SmartBurn last ?
When used correctly SmartBurn is designed to last up to 3 months
before it needs to be replaced. Temperature regulates the
speed at which SmartBurn operates.
It is
recommended that SmartBurn be placed to the side of the firebox,
being the coolest area, to enable it to work for its maximum
life.
Important:SmartBurn must get
hot to work
!!!
What benefits can
I expect to see when using my SmartBurn ?
SmartBurn improves the combustion
process within the firebox. Below are some benefits to look
for:-
· Reduced smoke from the chimney flue entering the atmosphere - smoke is wasted fuel !!!
· Clean Chimney flue – reduced chimney fire risk !!
· More heat is produced from your wood – more value from your wood - Saves $$$’s
· Clean heater glass window - more heat is radiated into the room
· Firewood burns for longer
· Less ash – Finer ash - less charcoal
· Fire lights easier – Fire ‘draws’ better - reducing smoke into the room
· Less soot and sap on the roof (cleaner water entering the rainwater tank
· Less wood used (the amount of wood saved can be about the value of the SmartBurn)
Product
performance may vary depending upon the Heater Model, wood
used and the manner in which the Heater is
operated.
How many
SmartBurns do I need in my fire?
One Smartburn is suitable for a standard small to medium sized
Domestic wood-heater.
A good indicator is: If there is smoke coming out of the chimney another SmartBurn is needed (Smoke is wasted fuel)
If there are
existing deposits in the chimney flue - 2 SmartBurns will
be more effective in
cleaning.
For heaters that
have a bend in the flue or a long chimney flue as in two
storey house - two SmartBurns would be more
effective.
Medium to Larger heaters ( medium size is 18sq or 180m2), open
fireplaces or fires that use big loads of wood and would
require 2 SmartBurns due to the increased combustion area and
extra wood load.
How does it
work? The mixtures of non toxic natural
ingredients in SmartBurn have been specially designed to be a solid
when cold. Once heated, the ingredients will melt and sit in the
‘bowl’ of the steel casing and will release a small amount of the
vapourised ingredients from the open ends. This vapour allows the
soot and sap (smoke) to be burnt ‘within’ the fire-box rather than
going up the chimney flue.
A small amount of these ingredients will act on any existing
residues (black soot and sap) on the internal walls in the chimney
flue. These will be slowly removed.
Once the fire-box is cold, the mixture of ingredients becomes a
solid again.
Plastics or
Aluminium cans should never be placed in a fire as they
release poisons when heated.
Why does the fire burn
hotter? SmartBurn, when heated, enables the
‘flammable’ black soot and sap to be burned ‘within’ the fire
rather than allow it to go up the chimney flue as
smoke.
How does the
SmartBurn reduce emissions from the
chimney flue? SmartBurn burns the smoke (black
soot and flammable sap) in the fire-box rather than allowing it to
travel up the chimney flue.
The smoke and particulates normally released into the atmosphere
are then reduced by up to 50%.
Each SmartBurn prevents approximately 15 kg of
smoke emissions from entering the atmosphere during its
lifespan.
How does
SmartBurn reduce a fire risk in the
chimney? The SmartBurn has been designed to
clean the chimney flue by slowly removing the black soot and
‘flammable’ sap build-up, and therefore reducing the risk of a
chimney fire.
Why does smoke come out
of the door when I open it? As the chimney flue
becomes blocked with soot and sap build up from the fire, the air
and smoke mix cannot escape fast enough up the chimney and smoke is
therefore forced back through the open door and into the room.
The SmartBurn is designed to clean the chimney flue of these
deposits and prevent this from happening.
Is SmartBurn effective on new
compliant heaters? Yes. SmartBurn
was Laboratory tested on a compliant heater. It was proven to be
very effective in improving combustion, reducing emissions by up to
50% and up to 17% more heat was produced. The Laboratory report has
NATA Certification.
How will I know when I need to buy
another SmartBurn? Excessive smoke will
be seen emitting from the chimney flue. The window and inside of
your fireplace will start to collect black soot and sap
deposits, particularly after the fire has been shutdown
overnight. The fire may not draw as well as it should
Will SmartBurn work in an open
fire? Yes. Best to place it towards the
side or back or under the grate where it will be least
disturbed.
Keep it flat and level at all times to keep the ingredients inside
the casing. When heated, the solid ingredients in the SmartBurn
melt and by keeping the unit level, the liquid ingredients stay
inside the vessel. If there is excessive smoke, due to the high wood load, 2
SmartBurns are necessary.
Place ash around the SmartBurn to stop it from tipping.
Do not "cook it" – do not place it in the concentrated heat area of
the fire (otherwise it will not last the 3 months).
Will SmartBurn work in a Potbelly stove or wood combustion
kitchen stove? Yes. But these stoves tend
to run very hot. SmartBurn will certainly work effectively but its
life may not be as long.To ensure the maximum life from the
SmartBurn you may like place it in the 'ash-pan' and sit it in ash
to stop it from tipping. Some people further protect the
SmartBurn from extreme heat by placing a paving brick
(firebrick) over it.
Will SmartBurn work better if I make my fire “Super”
hot? No! No! No! If the fire is "roaring hot"
SmartBurn will not last as long – depending on the high
temperatures generated, it may only last a few days.
SmartBurn prefers a lower temperature to clean the chimney
flue and firebox over a longer period of time, rather than give a
‘super fast’ clean if made super hot. Try and place it in the
‘coolest’ part of the firebox - preferably to one side.
Does the
SmartBurn deteriorate when the fire is
not in use? The ingredients in SmartBurn will
not deteriorate when the fire is not being used.
They have been specifically designed to "only" be activated when
the fire is heated.
My SmartBurn casing is empty !!!! If
the metal casing is empty it means that:-
1. The SmartBurn has been so “cooked” that it has vapourised
the ingredients extra fast OR
2. Ingredients have tipped out of the casing and fallen into
the ash OR
3. SmartBurn life has expired – buy a new SmartBurn
How do I dispose of my
empty SmartBurn
casing? Simply place the used container in the waste bin, or if
council has the programme, a metal recycle
facility.
Will the ingredients still work if they
have fallen out into the ash? Yes, it will still
work - even if covered in ash.
When the fire is cold, please be careful when removing the ash, so
as to not throw the ingredients out !!!!
Will the ingredients
released from SmartBurn corrode my
chimney flue? Generally wood is considered
acidic by nature; therefore the compounds and moisture contained in
wood can make them corrosive to the metal parts in the heater and
chimney flue. This is why ‘dry’ wood should always be
used.
Some heaters
can accept, at any one time, about 10 kg of wood, and if there
is say 20% moisture (water) in it, this then equates to 2 kg of
moisture which can be very highly corrosive, especially
when heated. This can cause the ‘peeling’ or ‘scaling’ of metal
inside the surface of the firebox.
There is no evidence to suggest that SmartBurn contributes to the
corrosion of heaters or chimney flues.
Is Wood Heating good for
the Environment? Firewood heats your Home
without Heating the Globe and has been rated a high 4.5 star by the
NSW Government relating to Greenhouse Gases. The World's First
Carbon Neutral Building uses wood heating. Choice Australia
supports wood heating as the most Environmental and Cost Effective
form of heating above fossil (electricity) fuels.
Will SmartBurn work in a coal
fire? Yes. SmartBurn’s mechanism has been
designed to work on any carbon based fuel which includes wood and
coal and also hydrocarbons including diesel and oil.
Can SmartBurn be used in industry? Yes.
A specifically designed unit can be made for Industrial
applications.
